Teaching Statement

As an educator, I prioritize the creation of an inclusive and equitable learning environment. Central to this goal is my commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the classroom. Representation matters on syllabi and in the classroom, which is why I support diversity in the student body by teaching works by people of colour and Indigenous authors that address a range of sexualities and genders. By doing so, I hope to create an environment that is reflective of the diverse experiences and perspectives of all students.

Collaboration is a key component of my teaching approach. By fostering opportunities for students to work together, share their perspectives, and learn from each other, I strive to develop their critical thinking skills and appreciation for diverse perspectives.

In lieu of traditional grading practices, I prioritize ungrading, which places emphasis on learning rather than grades. By providing constructive feedback and focusing on the learning process, I aim to create a supportive learning environment that encourages risk-taking, mistake-making, and growth.

Overall, I view teaching as a dynamic, interactive, and inclusive process that challenges students to think critically and creatively. Through the incorporation of EDI principles, collaborative learning, ungrading, and the inclusion of works by underrepresented authors, I aim to create a learning environment that prepares students for success in a constantly evolving world.
